Elijah Muhammad (1897-1975) was a black religious leader who became the leader of the so-called Nation of Islam (NOI) between 1934 and 1975. The NOI was founded in Detroit and grew as a powerful political and religious movement which aimed to enhance the  spiritual, political, social, and economic conditions of African American people in the US, and, as an ultimate goal, of all of human beings.

Due to Muhammad's separatist perspectives, his most famous student, Malcolm X, severed ties with the group and, before his assassination in 1965, relieved lend identity to the group (formerly known as the American Muslim Mission and now part of orthodox Muslims throughout the world. ) which divided from the Nation of Islam after Muhammad's death in 1975. Another group, which maintained the name and principles of the original Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad, was founded under the leadership of Louis Farrakhan.
