There is indirect or representative democracy when the decision is taken by people recognized by the people as their representatives. There is participatory democracy when a political model is applied that facilitates the citizens' ability to associate and organize themselves in such a way that they can exert a direct influence on public decisions or when broad plebiscite consultative mechanisms are made available to the citizenry.
