The first change brought by the advent of agriculture to human social structures, due to the manner of exploitation required by this activity, was that it triggered the establishment of sedentary settlements. This meant the start of the Neolithic period, in contrast with the nomadic lifestyle in the former Paleolithic era.

Agriculture and sedentarism also brought specialization and division of labor. Specialization allowed to improve the instruments and tools used for each activity (agriclture, animal husbandry, hunting, etc) and therefore productivity was rapidly enhanced.
