The Magna Charta Libertatum (from the medieval Latin, "Great Charter of liberties"), commonly called Magna Carta, is a charter accepted on 15 June 1215 by King John of England in Runnymede, near Windsor. Drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to achieve peace between the unpopular king and a group of commoners, it guaranteed the protection of church rights, the protection of civilians against illegal detention, the guarantee of rapid justice and the limitation on feudal payments to the crown.

It was called magna not to confuse it with a minor provision, a card issued in those years to sanction a series of limits to the power of the English sovereign. Even though it presented itself as a unilateral concession by the king, it actually constituted a contract for the recognition of reciprocal rights.

King John, who had signed this document under coercion and fought the rebels with the blessing of Pope Innocent III until his death, was in fact the last true theocratic sovereign, although many descendants successfully succeeded in restoring the absolute monarchy.
