Mahayana and Theravada are the two types of Buddhism practiced nowadays. Many of their beliefs are similar, however, they have significant differences as well.

Theravada Buddhism can be found in South East Asia. It tends to give more importance to liberation (arhat) and nirvana as opposed to the role of the Bodhisattva path. It teaches to "analyze" experiences, and to apply critical reasoning in order to gain knowledge. It focuses on silent, mindful meditation.

Mahayana Buddhism is located in Tibet and China. Mahayana Buddhism teaches that individual enlightenment is not sufficient, but that enlightenment for all human beings must be pursued. Meditation uses mantras and chanting, especially in Tibetan Buddhism.
