Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory introduced by Abraham Maslow in his paper, "A Theory of Human Motivation", in Psychological Review in 1943.

He thinks that the needs at the lower level must be met or at least sufficiently met before the needs at a higher level become motivating.

The concept of basic needs hierarchy began when Maslow made observations on the behavior of monkeys. Based on his observations, it was concluded that some needs take precedence over other needs.

These needs are often referred to as Maslow's basic needs which are described as a hierarchy or ladder that describes the level of needs.
