What were the key provisions of the civil rights act of 1964?

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the most famous law by that name and, along with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, is considered to have established equal rights in the United States of America for African Americans and other minorities. The law extended comprehensive citizenship law to the entire United States and banned discrimination in public and private places, businesses, etc., with the exception of "private clubs," a concept that was not defined further.  

President Lyndon Johnson initiated the proposal indirectly after his predecessor John F. Kennedy's death, and the majority of both parties voted for the law, with about 80% of Republican members and away 70% of Democrats in Congress.
