england first attempt of colonization in north america was when queen elizabeth give sir walter raleigh a charter to go explore and set up a permanent colony somewhere in northern america. raleigh invested his own money to establish his own colony at roanoke island which happened in 1585. this attempt was known as the ralph lane colony, this colony doesn't exist anymore due to the conflict with the native americans who were living there and the lack of food and supplies to use. then england tried again in 1587 to set up a colony on the same island but this time the colony was called the john white colony, but soon later it became known as the lost colony because it is a mystery of why the colony have disappeared but we known that both colonies were suffering from some of the same problems. 20 years later in 1607, england was successful to build a colony but this time in jamestown virginia, but there was a catch jamestown almost became a failed mission due to the colonists starving to death, but to john smith and lord de la warr they forced the colonists to grow food first than look for gold and other precious metals. the reasons england wanted to establish a colony in northern america was to increase their wealth and power, they also hoped to find precious metals such as gold and silver.
