Tom and Huck were in danger because it was not an easy thing to free a slave from his owners. Huck wanted to steal the key to free Jim, but then Tom thought about digging a hole to take Jim out of the shed where he was. Neither Huck nor Jim were able to persuade Tom to abandon his idea of accomplishing such a task because Tom was an intrepid, brave boy and he considered that freeing the slave Jim was a noble gesture.
