After 1707, the Mughal Empire started its decline, although there is some disagreement as to the specific reasons for this. Several wars and general chaos continued throughout the century, and by the mid-18th century, many provinces were controlled by the Marathas. At its lowest, Mughal power was only present in the city of Shahjahanabad. The last emperor, Bahadur Shah II, was eventually defeated, imprisoned and exiled.
