Naval power played a decisive role in the final outcome of WWI. The course of the war on the sea didn´t follow the plans layed out by either German or British planners, but naval power was fundamental. German submarines posed a grave threat to allied commercial ships. And the British blockade to damage Germany´s economy turned out to be a key factor in the defeat of Central Powers.  Most naval operations took place in the North Sea and in the Atlantic Ocean between Britain and Germany.
