1:1. 1909: President Zelaya of Nicaragua was initiating reforms to benefit Nicaraguans and limit the monopoly of American fruit companies and took loans from Europe instead of the US which reduced his dependency on the US government. The US firms didn’t like that, so they appealed to the US government, which began isolating Nicaragua diplomatically. Later, they backed a rebellion by Juan Estrada, and when Zelaya executed a force of rebels, two American mercenaries among them, the US severed ties to Nicaragua and landed Marines. Zelaya was forced to flee, as was his successor, and in the player vacuum that followed, the US installed pro-US leaders and wrote a new constitution which essentially turned Nicaragua into a US protectorate. The rise of the Sandinistas and the brutal wars fought in Nicaragua stem from this invasion.
