The Whig Party was a political party active during the mid-nineteenth century. Together with the Democratic Party, the Whig party was one of the main parties in the US political scenario between the late 1830s and early 1850s, a period that some scholars have called the "second party system".  

Whigs promoted a program of economic interventionism known as the "American system", which provided for the establishment of protectionist tariffs, federal subsidies for the construction of infrastructures and the establishment of a central bank.
