dear journal,

i have been on this ship for quite some time now. the shipped is filled with many people, of all classes, all filled with hope to succeed with their american dream. i have been placed in the bottom of the boat, filled with the lower class. many have passed due to sickness; the stench of death is over powering. i have been told that it won’t be long until the ship ports and we can all escape the wretched smell as well as the awful illnesses, people, and crammed spaces.  

although leaving russia was for my best interest, i can’t but feel some sort of regret. russia is my home and where my family is, however, i know that if i didn’t leave i would have been prosecuted because of my choice of semitism. plus, america has many opportunities for success, education, as well as freedom.  

the ship should port within the next few days, i plan on staying with some family while i find a good job as well as learn to locate my ways around the city. throughout this passage. all i have heard, what a wonderful site it will be. when i first boarded i did not know what to expect nor what would be waiting for me on the other side. the other passengers have talked about lady liberty as well as what she stands for, i have heard stories and look forward to living the reality. i am looking forward for the docking of this ship, the sight of liberty herself, and the smell of freedom.
