Treaty of paris- 1898- concerned cuba, puerto rico, and guam, all of which went to us. annexation of hawaii- white american planters, led by sanford b. dole, used marines stationed in hawaii to protect their businesses to overthrow queen in 1893. annexed in 1898 and dole becomes governor. philippine insurrection- 1899-1902- people of the philippines wanted independence from spain and did not get it, vote in congress, and were denied from us. emilio aguinaldo, fought for us in spanish-american war, fights against them with the guerrilla fighters of the philippines. insular cases- 1901-1903- philippines- supreme court rules constitutional rights were not extended to territorial possessions and that the power to decide whether or not to grant such rights belonged to congress. platt amendment- 1901- required cuba to agree to never sign a treaty with a foreign power that impaired its independence. it also permitted us to intervene in their affairs (to preserve its law and order) and allowed the us to maintain naval bases in cuba, including one permanent (guantanamo bay)the great rapprochement- reconciliation between the united states and britain, the new anglo-american cordiality became a cornerstone of both nations’ foreign policies as the twentieth century opened.
