In Chapter XVII of the text "The Odyssey" by Homer, we find Odysseus in disguise as a beggar going to his palace to face the suitors with Eumaeus, his swineherd.

At the entrance of the palace, he saw his dog Argos which he had taken before he left for Troy. The dog had grown old and even though others cannot tell the real identity of the beggar, Argos immediately remembered his master and wagged his tail. He "raised his head and pric ked up his ears, [and] died as soon as he had recognized his master."
