Why did the framers of the constitution create the electoral "college" system for choosing the president?

In was believed by the framers of the constitution that the citizens or general population can easily be swayed by sentiment, grammatical eloquence and powerful campaign tools into voting an individual who may not be qualified for the post of the president, hence the establishment of the electoral college in electing the president
