What made the Battle of Stalingrad a major turning point in World War II? The German victory at Stalingrad made it clear that the Soviet Union could not defeat the Axis Powers. After the victory at Stalingrad, the alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union broke down. Losing the Battle of Stalingrad forced Germany to surrender, ending the war. Soviet forces defeated Axis forces and began to push them back to Germany.
