In China's situation, in particular, the one-child policy was established to slow its population growth. From 1950 to 1979 China's population almost doubled from 540 million to 969 million. It was in 1979 when the one-child policy was enacted.  

The country's birth rate in 2019 declined by 2% from 2018. There are approximately 12 births per 1000 people in China. In 1979 China's average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 5% per year. In 2010 its GDP reached a peak of 10%.

Thus, the one-child policy in China's case seems to be successful. However, it does not imply that establishing the same measure in another country will have positive results.
