The drive theory, or drive doctrine is referred to as the theory that tries  to determine, classify, or analyze the psychological drives. A drive is a need that is  instinctual  that has the power of motivating  the behaviour of an individual, such state is called   an "excitatory state” developed by a disturbance that are homeostatic.

The principle of the theory of drives is based on organisms with a certain psychological needs and when these needs are not meet a negative state of tension state is created.

Humans, Animals and Organisms are born with certain subconscious needs, such as the need to provide for family, the need to feed as described by the Drive theory. a state of tension that is seen as negative is created when these needs are not satisfied. When such need is satisfied, drive level is reduced which helps achieve a relaxed state and balance state
