Over the years, rivers have played an important role in the economic development of Europe, largely due to their ability to interconnect the various regions of the continent. Despite its proximity to the North Pole, in general Europe enjoys a mild and temperate climate. There are two reasons why most of Europe is relatively warm. First, the warmer, westerly winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean prevent the colder, northern Arctic winds from penetrating most of Europe; besides Scandinavia, most of the cold air can be found in Eastern Europe. Second, the North Atlantic Drift takes warm water from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean north to the Arctic Ocean and North Sea. Although the Arctic Ocean is a cold body of water, because of the North Atlantic Drift, the water surrounding the British Isles and much of Northern Europe (primarily the North and Baltic Seas) is much warmer than it should be. Due to the warming effects of these phenomena, the four major climate zones that exist in Europe are generally warmer than they should be for their latitude. The four climate zones are: Mediterranean, marine west coast, humid continental, and boreal forest.
