British troops were sent in to stop the rebellion, and thousands were killed – some historians put the numbers in the hundreds of thousands. After the rebellion, the East India Company was disbanded, and the British government took over in India. This time period is called the British Raj (which means “administration”). The Queen appointed a viceroy to rule the colony in her name.
