After the Townshend Story, some essay writers even started to question whether Parliament had any legal jurisdiction in the colonies at all. Anticipating the preparation of the British Commonwealth, by 1774 American writers like James Wilson, Thomas Jefferson, and Samuel Adams stated that Parliament was the government of Great Britain alone and that the groups, which had their own assemblies, were related to the rest of the empire just by their loyalty to the Crown.
