Fasha Mahjoor, founder and president of Phenomenex, a chemical specialty firm in California said, "I attribute all of our success to our people and that is a direct reflection of our culture. It is critical to create a culture of ownership so that people understand their impact. If you don't create work and life balance, how do they stay in the game showing up every day and performing at their best level? I describe our culture as vivacious, energetic, optimistic, and a positive force for people. It is a culture of good business because it is good for people in every way. Our goal is to create an environment that is worthy of their presence."

The company is celebrated because of its amazing culture and spirit at work. They acknowledge that the success of their company is a direct result from their culture and people. Not only is culture important in a businesses setting but it is important in shaping the behaviors, disciplines, and norms of those in your personal life.

Culture is a pattern of behavior that is shared by a group of people. It is a set of values that establishes a common understanding and rules that lead to a specific outcome. Here's a practical example: a leader creates a set of non-negotiable "cultural values" that his group commits to live by. They might be as simple as, "everyone must go to bed at 10:00 PM and wake up at 7:00 AM" or "when a team member fails, don't swear or yell at them but show them dignity while confronting their misbehavior". These values, when agreed upon before an incident happens, will give the community a framework to guide them and steer them towards a desired outcome. The desired outcome in this example is a healthy community built on mutual respect.

Healthy Values = Healthy Culture = Achieve Desired Outcome

People don't want to put their life and success in the hands of chance. In order to create a specific outcome for their life, they must establish and surround themselves with people who agree to uphold a common set of rules and expectations.

Reflect on your life and the expectations you have for your purpose, success, and future. Do you have high aspirations or low expectations? Do you have a set of values or principles that you see as non-negotiable or are you consistently changing your values based on who you’re around?

How does Fasha Mahjoor’s message inspire you? What common values and principles are easy to spot in your communities? Can you identify any values and principles in your community that is not mentioned in Fasha Mahjoor's message but are essential to positively building the community around you?

Cite evidence from the above reading that supports the analysis of "Healthy Values = Healthy Culture = Achieve the Desired Outcome."
