What eventually led to the abandonment of Jamestown?

Jamestown was abandoned twice. The first time due to starvation and collapse. The second was the decision to move the capital of the colony to Williamsburg.

In 1699 the capital of the Virginia colony was moved from Jamestown to Middle Plantation, that would later be renamed Williamsburg. There had been a fire in 1698 that it is believed a prisoner started in protest to his execution. The fire destroyed the prison facilities and the local statehouse and in general officials coming from England felt the defenses of the Jamestown site were lacking. People continued to live on Jamestown Island and people continued to own lands and farm, but eventually, it  ceased even being a town or settlement.  Earlier in 1610, the colony was briefly abandoned after what was called The Starving Time. The settlers had faced a difficult winter and many got sick and died.  The survivors had planned to abandon the colony but were met relatively closeby with news that a new fleet was coming with a new governor. After 1610 the Jamestown settlement had become prosperous for a period due to tobacco cultivation.
