Why do you think the American Army struggled so much against Little Turtle?

Little Turtle is an important figure in the Northwest Indian War from 1791-1795.  He had first gained recognition in the American Revolutionary War where he sided with the English and raids against American settlements in Kentucky. During the revolution, Little Turtle gained notoriety because he attacked a French officer named La Balme and his men who were aiding the Patriots. The Northwest Indian war was a consequence of the Treaty of Paris that ended the revolution and ceded power over the Ohio Valley and areas West of the Appalachian Mountains.  President George Washington sent the army to enforce the government's rule over the territory. However, the soldiers were largely untrained recruits and militiamen and they were defeated a number of times like the Harmar Campaign (1790) and St. Clair's Defeat (1791) which were lead by Little Turtle and other allies. About 1,000 of the men fighting on the US side were killed. These are among the worst losses ever experienced by the US Army.
