Step 2: Write Your Essay
Now, it’s time to write your essay. Keep your Then and Now sheets where youcan refer to them.
• Write the Introduction. This paragraph presents your thesis statement andcaptures the reader’s attention. You may add some general information ifyou wish.
Do not use specific examples in the introduction. Write in a general way. Write three to five sentences.
• Write the body:
1. Use the main topic sentences to state the main idea of each paragraph.
2. Explain the topic sentence using the information listed in the subtopics and specifics in that section of the outline.
3. Write a concluding sentence that connects back to the topic sentence.

• Write a concluding paragraph that summarizes the major ideas of youressay and restates your thesis in some way. Consider making anemotional or thought-provoking appeal to the reader to support yourposition. Write three or four sentences.

• Read back through the whole essay. Do you think your essay supportsyour position? Are all your ideas clearly written? If not, reword or rewriteany sections you think need to be revised.
