THESE MEAN PEOPLE REALLY BE TROLLING WITH MY GRADES BRUHLET REALLY REPORT CARDS ARE TOMMROW I NEED HELP TEXT: Massachusetts and New England are Born
After Jamestown and Virginia began growing, more English colonies were soon set up further north. The areas of the northeast that are now Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine became known as the New England Colonies.

The first colony in New England was formed for religious reasons. A group of Christians in England called the Puritans wanted a “purer” kind of Christianity and were persecuted (attacked because of their beliefs). In 1620, a group of Puritans called “Pilgrims” sailed to New England on a ship called the Mayflower to set up a colony where they could practice their religious beliefs. The Pilgrims started their colony at a harbor they called Plymouth, named for the port they had sailed from. Life in Plymouth colony was very hard and more than half the Pilgrims died from freezing and starvation. However, the local native tribe helped them survive by showing them how to plant corn. The large corn harvest in the fall of 1621 led the Pilgrims to have a major feast in celebration: the first Thanksgiving. After Plymouth grew, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was formed in 1643 as a larger territory for Puritans. Within 15 years, more than 20,000 people were living in 20 towns, including its capital, Boston.

The Puritans were extremely strict Christians. Most of their laws were religious. Church attendance was required, dancing and gambling were forbidden, and drinking on Sundays was outlawed. People were not allowed to live alone. They did not believe in tolerating any other religious beliefs but their own. They believed that God intended their colony to succeed as a safe place for “pure” Christianity. Violating Puritan rules could have serious consequences. In the town Salem, Massachusetts, a group of girls claimed that the devil had taken control of them, and accused three townspeople of being witches. People around town became hysterical with fear, more and more people were accused of witchcraft, and the Massachusetts authorities ordered 20 men and women to death by hanging.

Wars with the Native Americans
In both Virginia and Massachusetts, the English settlers repeatedly fought with the Native Americans. The Native tribes initially helped the colonists survive- giving them food, trading with them, and showing them how to farm crops like corn and squash. However, as more English settlers arrived, the colonists wanted more and more land. They would cut down forests to make farms, pushing the natives out of their homeland. Violence with native tribes increased each year. Tribes would raid the English settlements, killing men, women and children. The settlers would respond even more harshly, often burning entire native villages to the ground. The colonists would turn the tribes against each other, making alliances with some to fight others. This tactic, along with European weapons and diseases, nearly destroyed all tribal Native American life in New England by 1676. The English conquest of the northeast was nearly complete.
