Create a sketch map of the world.
Assignment Prompt
In this assignment, you will conduct research and use what you have learned to create a sketch map
of the world. For a sketch map the landforms do not need to be exactly perfect, but you should include
the major features of the continents, along with a general representation of the size and shape of
each.
Assignment Instructions
Step 1: Gather materials and necessary information.
a) Conduct research online to find a good representation of a world map to follow.
b) Take good notes on the locations of continents and oceans.
c) The sketch map should be hand drawn, and then submitted as a photo or scanned into
the computer.
Step 2: Consider the required elements of the map.
a) A rough outline of the continents, and labels for each: North America, South America,
Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica
b) A title
c) A compass rose to show direction
d) Labels for the oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic
e) Label (and draw as needed) the following bodies of water: Caribbean Sea,
Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, Arabian Sea, Black Sea, Hudson Bay, and the Gulf of
Mexico
f) Draw and label the following rivers: Mississippi, Nile, Amazon
g) Label the Indian Subcontinent and the Cape of Good Hope
h) Draw and label major islands in the Caribbean, including Cuba and Hispaniola
i) Draw and label the Equator and Prime Meridian

Step 3: Think about these steps for creating a successful map.
a) Plan: Sketch your ideas for the map on a piece of paper or on the computer. Make note
of the major physical features and locations of the largest cities.
b) Draft: Create a rough draft of your map.
c) Revise: Review your work, correct mistakes, and make improvements.
Step 4: Evaluate your timeline using this checklist. When you can answer “yes” to all the
questions, you are ready to submit your map.
