There has historically been a relationship of encroachment between the United States and Native Americans, where the dominant mainstream Anglosaxon culture has ignored or done very little to help Native American ways of life to become sustainable and survive. Mainstream society has largely expected Native Americans to assimilate or to contain their ways of life to reservations. Native Americans living on reservations had issues with a lack of resources and high levels of unemployment with high rates of depression and substance abuse as a result.  There were also conundrums created in high rates of violence on reservations and where state police have little authority to intervene because of the legal structure of Native American reservations in many states.

A three-step plan would be to add more information about Native American culture and society, including the present-day into the school curricula so that mainstream culture becomes more sensitive to Native American communities. There should be a new task force to look at some of the legal dilemmas that have arisen around jurisdiction so that resources can be more effectively delegated to the Native American communities while still respecting their autonomy. Finally, a political and cultural space needs to be created that includes more of Native American culture under political and legal protection as a part of our reality and not something that needs to be assimilated away.
