The story of David and Goliath is significant in 1 Samuel because this was a key factor in David being chosen to be king of Israel. Goliath the Gittite was a legendary giant who fought on the side of the Philistines, who occupied the rich coastal plains of Palestine, from Egypt to about a far north as modern Tel Aviv.
