Most Russians live where there is a humid continental climate to the west in the region that borders Europe and along the southern border.

The population of Russia is much more concentrated in the West and South of the country, along its southern border. The country is less populated to the  North and North East, where the climate is cold and harsh for most of the year.  The region along the southern border that stretches from Europe to Asia is a  humid continental climate. The northernmost reaches are arctic tundra, and the remaining land is located between these two points is subarctic.  The cities with the most population are located in this humid continental zone like Moscow and  Novosibirsk. St Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city and it is located far north near Finland.  However, it has the humid continental climate of Western and Southern Russia because of the effects of the Baltic Sea which makes it more temperate.
