The major cause of the end of Reconstruction was due to attention being towards civil rights and the well being of ex slaves, granting them their voting rights and being able to hold office.

“Many Southern whites could not accept the idea that former slaves could not only vote, but also hold office.”

Republicans, had collapsed in all states but two, which had Democrats take their positions in local governments.

“Reconstruction state governments fell, Democrats retook positions in local governments.”
