Why did europeans explore the interior of africa

The Europeans stumbled on to Africa (actually the gold coast to be exact) while they were in search for a faster (easier) route to India so they could enhance the trade of spices and other things when they explored Africa they became attracted to things such as gold and ivory and would do anything in order to obtain things such as gold, salt, ivory and spices. They also explored Africa to obtain land which ultimately makes the owner more powerful. Slave industry had a great time in Africa. Cheap labor. No need to pay.  It is tragic how Africa was exploited in the early years, and some places still is.
