Plessy v. Ferguson
As you read in the lesson, a Louisiana court case called Plessy v. Ferguson challenged
segregation and went all the way to the U. S. Supreme Court in 1896. The court's
decision upheld segregation with the "separate but equal" argument, causing racism to
flourish for the next 58 years, when the decision was overturned by a Supreme Court
decision in Brown v.
Board of Education that desegregated public schools in the United States.
