For this assignment, you will be given a scenario to consider. All of the questions in the
assignment relate to that scenario.
Think of a situation in which you have been in a cultural minority, such as
being one of the few people in your school who spoke your language at home
or being the only high school student working in a particular convenience
store.
1. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine that right now you are in the situation
described. Sense how it looks and feels. Briefly describe the situation.
2. Cultural differences: What do you notice about the majority culture? List at least
three features of the majority culture that you have become aware of.
3. Cultural awareness: What have you learned about yourself or your own culture
because of your immersion in the other culture? Think of something you might
not have noticed otherwise. Use this as an example to illustrate how
cross-cultural immersion can contribute to cultural awareness.
4. How does it feel to be part of the minority culture in this situation? Describe both
positive and negative feelings, whichever are appropriate. How have your feelings
changed over time, if at all?
