For the topic- Persuade your principal to host a Veterans Day ceremony in your school.

PART A

Why would school principals object to asking students to mark Veterans Day with a ceremony? After all, it is an official United States holiday and a federal holiday created to reverently honor the military veterans who have served this country, sometimes dying for this country. Is it too much to ask students with a parent or sibling in uniform to bring in a photo or is it too much to ask a vet to visit the school? Some people think so.

PART B

In the past, the country has been glad to salute the military, glad to contribute to nonprofits or hoist a flag on July 4. The compelling need to recognize the military and the contribution of our veterans fades. In some ways, I’m sure that is how it should be, the natural ebb and flow of human interest. Yet isn’t that why we have a Veterans Day so that even in the busyness of a year we take a day to mark the service of all those who donned a uniform to protect the rest of us?

PART C

Do you want the kids at your school to be kind, brave and smart?  Why not bring veterans in to teach them about their bravery from their battles? To learn from the best you need to bring in the best so invite veterans to speak to the students. Local historical or other patriotic organizations may enliven the Veterans Day ceremony by providing period-uniformed flag bearers, fife and drum corps, and other marching and musical units. These organizations may also provide speakers with unique military experiences to share.

Student body participation may be increased by including various presentations by individual pupils. Veterans Day stories can be featured in school publications. The creative talents of students can be encouraged through participation in a school-wide Veterans Day poster contest. Winners should be appropriately recognized and awarded certificates. Local newspapers should be invited to photograph the winning entries.

It is one day. It is 15 minutes in homeroom to ask if any students have a family member in uniform. It is a 30-second note of how many people in our state currently serve and how that affects the economy. It is a math problem that invokes the budget of the Department of Defense. It is a moment in a history class or geography class or social studies class to notice the sacrifices made and the historical gains created by those who served.  

It is one day, School Principal. Veterans Day is November 11. And, really, it is not too much to ask.
