Today the sun was shining extra bright. Ma and Pa haven’t been getting along since this journey has caused many heartaches. Last week we lost my younger sister to typhoid fever. I had to go out and collect some Buffalo patties so we could cook the few rabbits we had left over from last hunt. The days seem to be getting longer but I feel we are close to being in California for the gold rush. While roasting the rabbit I burnt my hand but it’s nothing new to these callused hands. Going through the motions each day has become my way of life and I wonder if life will ever be like how it used to. As I sit here around the fire I reminisce on the days I would swim in the lake with my friends and have no worry in the world. Life is different now but maybe this new adventure is going to be good for me.
