Why would people or governments want to burn books?

Usually carried out in a public context, the burning of books represents an element of censorship and usually proceeds from a cultural, religious, or political opposition to the materials in question.

Normally, this would be because of "not wanting the citizens to become knowledgable". By this I mean, with knowledge people gain power and go higher up into the hierachy system, government would burn books so that these people would not gain power and won't overtake theirs, so that the government has more control over these people.
