Tay-Sachs disease is a recessive genetic disorder that causes deterioration of nerve cells and of mental and physical abilities that begins around six months of age and usually results in death by the age of four. Some individuals develop adult onset Tay-Sachs and aren’t diagnosed until later in life. Tay-Sachs is usually found in French-Canadians, Cajuns, and Ashkenazi Jews. Carrier parents have a 25% chance of giving the disease to their offspring.
