Assessment 2: Photo essay Counts 20% of your final mark
With your phone and maybe a friend or family member for security!), take a walk through the
town or city where you live. You can walk through your own neighbourhood or select another
area that you think is interesting. While you are walking, consider whether and how this can be
thought of as a postcolonial space'. You may want to consider issues like when South Africa was
decolonised in relation to when apartheid started and ended, what your city or town looks like
today, what style of architecture or building you encounter, what kind of infrastructure you
encounter, wealth/ inequality and how we may be able to read postcoloniality - a critical position
and theoretical tool - into geographical spaces. These ideas are guidelines: you are not expected
to talk about all of them, and you are welcome to ask completely different questions if you prefer
During your walk, make notes of your ideas and take photos of interesting scenes and sites that
can be used to support your arguments. Once you are back at home, put together a photo essay in
which you include:
A brief opening statement explaining the location that you are analysing and how we can
use postcolonial theories to understand it
At least three images of your chosen location, which help to support the main point you
are making
Brief written discussions of each image to explain what you see in it and what we can
learn from it, in terms of the assignment's aims
The written component of this assignment should be around 800 words. Please do not use
references or external texts this is a creative project that is designed to let you develop your own
individual voice and eye. Please paste your images into a Word document and write your text to
accompany them, and then submit everything as one document No abstract is required.
This assignment will be marked by peer review meaning that you mark each other's
work. Each student will automatically be assigned two photo essays to look at. You will have one
week to read and comment on each these. Each photo essay needs to given at least three
comments, as well as a mark out of 10. You will lose 10% of your own stark for each essay you do
