Why can’t you make a two-dimensional map of a three-dimensional object?

Because you can't display 3D surfaces perfectly in two dimensions, distortions always occur.  map projections distort distance, direction, scale, and area.

3d has x axis, y axis and z axis (depth). with 2d you only have x axis and y axis.
