Chinese immigration increased towards the end of the Civil War, between 1849 and 1882 (when the federal government restricted their immigration).

These immigrants were mostly attracted by the discovery of gold in California, in what became known as the California Gold Rush. The majority of Chinese immigrants were single men who came to work for a while, saved some money, and planned to go back home. However, some of them stayed in the United States, opening restaurants, laundries and other similar businesses. They also worked in the construction of railroads and in industrial jobs. These people were often victims of hate and racism, which eventually led to the Chinese Exclusion Act, passed by Congress in 1882, which stopped their immigration.
