While a subculture differentiates itself from mainstream culture it still maintians some of the dominant culture's principals and the differences between subcultures and the dominant one mostly derive from variables such as socio-economic status, religion or ethnicity.

Meanwhile, a counterculture is a concept more linked to a political positioning, it is a culture that not only seeks to differentiate itself from the dominant culture but it explicitly rejects it. Rejecting society's values and norms is one of the political connotations of the concept and it has helped sociology understand social movements such as the civil rights movement.
