When we hear the word disabilities, many of us picture first a person with a physical disability, perhaps someone in a wheelchair. Yet, many kids with physical disabilities don’t need special education services at all. What do you think may be the most important services these students do need to succeed in class?

Perhaps you are surprised to see that children with chronic diseases like cancer, or even asthma, may receive special education and related services. Remember, it is the extent to which the condition affects school performance that is the determining factor. How might you accommodate your instruction for a child who has a severe and chronic illness? Where might you look to find resources or ideas?

The range of characteristics of individuals with physical disabilities and health impairments is arguably wider than in any other category of special education. One of the greatest errors we’ve made, as a society, is assuming that individuals with significant physical disabilities also have severe cognitive disabilities. How can this type of assumption affect expectations by and for individuals with physical disabilities?

What are some of the modifications you see in schools that let you know they are accessible?

Adults with physical disabilities are among the most vocal advocates for personal and civil rights. In what ways can you participate as an advocate whether or not you have a physical disability, in your community, or at the national level?

What advances can you envision that might improve the quality of life for people with physical disabilities?

How could you, the teacher, encourage classroom participation on the part of a student who uses an augmentative communication device (e. g. communication board, talking computer, etc.)? What challenges could they foresee, and how could those challenges be overcome? How could the teacher encourage other students to engage in communication with a non-verbal student with physical disabilities?
