The War was fought from March 8, 1862 to March 9, 1862. The battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack was considered because both were fighting without causing any injury to the other.

On March 8, 1862, Merrimack fired cannonballs on USS Cumberland ship (Union's ship) and it sunk as it was made of wood. Next day, Unions came prepared with their ironclad, Monitor. Both the ships kept firing cannonballs at each other without injuring the other.

This became boring for both the army, thus, both returned back rendering the battle inconclusive.
