The Civil War was the bloodiest military conflict in American history. After the war, the United
States was faced with the task of burying and honoring 600,000 to 800,000 Union and
Confederate soldiers. The commemoration of Memorial Day came out of this momentous task.
The holiday honors soldiers who have died while fighting in battle. The first national
commemoration of Memorial Day was held in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on May 30,
1868.
