The European Union (EU) was established in 1993. It’s a political and economic governing body consisting of 28 European nations. Since its formation, the EU has created a standardized system of laws for member states as well as a singular currency, the euro. Many member states have also agreed to open borders, ensuring fluid trade and allowing citizens to travel freely between EU countries. The United Kingdom has always maintained some distance from the EU. Though it became a member state in 1993, it kept its own currency and never eliminated the barriers to trade and travel that most other EU countries had. But as mainland Europe grew strained by high debts and unemployment rates, some became convinced that the UK would be better off without the EU. Concerns about immigration stemming from the refugee crisis also contributed to this increasingly popular perspective.

Which of these is true of the UK’s relationship with the EU?

A. The UK became a member of the EU in 1928.

B. The UK uses the EU’s standard currency, the euro.

C. The UK does not have the same trade regulations as the EU.

D. The UK suffers from high debts and unemployment rates, unlike the rest of the EU.
