Another reason the Quran is so important in Islam, is because the Quran set the groundwork for Islam and serves as a guide today along with other sacred texts like the Hadith, think of the Quran as the Islamic bible. The development of Islam was considered controversial by many due to Islam spreading "by the sword" and that means through conquest. Keep in mind, it also spread through trade, pilgrimages, among other things.
