Mansa Musa, was the tenth Mansa of the Mali Empire, an Islamic West African state. At the time of Musa's ascension to the throne, Mali in large part consisted of the territory of the former Ghana Empire, which Mali had conquered.

Mansa Musa inherited a kingdom that was already wealthy, but his work in expanding trade made Mali the wealthiest kingdom in Africa. His riches came from mining significant salt and gold deposits in the Mali kingdom.

Elephant ivory was another major source of wealth.Mansa Musa was the African ruler of the Mali Empire in the 14th century.

When Mansa Musa, a Muslim, took a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 he reportedly brought a procession of 60,000 men and 12,000 slaves.

After Mansa Musa died in 1337, aged 57, the empire was inherited by his sons who could not hold it together. The smaller states broke off and the empire crumbled.
